Hamat Tiberias National Park North, Tiberias

This ancient synagogue, dating back to the time when the Sanhedrin was headquartered in Tiberius, was found by accident. In 1920, pioneers building the Tiberias-Zemach road uncovered remains of the synagogue.  A year later they found a seven branch menorah here. Further excavations uncovered the earliest mosaic to be found in a synagogue in Israel. It is called the Severus Synagogue after a name that appears in a Greek inscription on the famous mosaic floor. The Hamman Suleiman Museum, inventories the history of the region.

The city of Hamat Tiberias itself is famous for 17 natural springs that, since antiquity, have been known for their healing quality. In fact, their power for healing various illnesses was considered so legit, the sages permitting bathing in them on the Sabbath. Up the hill from the springs is the grave of the famous sage, Rabbi Meir Ba’al Hanes.
